Who Am I? – Week 3- Mark Freeman

Big Idea: Surrendering the throne of the heart to Adonai.

“1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

4 At  the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

• Adonai is seated on His throne, at rest.
•  “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty. The whole earth is full of His glory.”

“15 As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; 16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.”

The whole earth is full of His glory! Our response is pure worship. 

Questions to Ponder:

• What might you be tempted to trust in for peace and security other than Jesus?
• Do you like the fact that when Isaiah encounters God He is sitting down?
• How is this scene like or unlike the condition of your heart right now? 
• Is KING a word you like to use when referring to Jesus? (why/why not)?
• What would it look like to live in full appreciation of these attributes of God?

Here Am I

Who am I? Here am I.

I love this phrase because we can string so many of the pillars of the Old Testament together with these three words. Abraham, when God called to him to sacrifice his son, “Here am I” (Genesis 22:1). Abraham again, when God called him to withhold the sacrifice, “Here am I” (Genesis 22:11). Jacob, as God called him to lead his family to Egypt, “Here am I” (Genesis 46:2) Moses, as God called to him from the burning bush, “Here am I” (Exodus 3:4). And others.

When we think of the phrase, “Here am I”, it sounds like a response to the question, “Where am I?” But I submit that in the context of our relationship with God, it’s equally an answer to the question “Who am I?”

It describes a posture. It describes a readiness. It describes surrender. “God, here am I. Use me. Lead me. Send me.” I’ve been thinking about this idea a lot lately. I get so distracted. I get so focused on my agenda. I get so afraid of the cost. Of what I might lose. And I wonder how “here” I truly am. How receptive am I to God’s word, His prompting, His heart for the world? When we consider that the Holy Spirit is living, active, and always at work, are we looking at our daily lives through that lens? At every person and situation and need that we come across? Here am I.

The challenge I’m taking with me this week – and perhaps a challenge for you, too – is how can I better adopt a posture of “Here am I”. Willing. Ready. Listening.
