Week 2: Rahab

Scripture Reference:  Joshua 2:1-24

Justice & Grace

by Brandi Harris

Rahab’s entry into the story of God begins with her recognition of God’s holiness and power. She submits BEFORE God forces her hand. She sees the impending doom. She sees her own sin and her community’s moral failure. She wisely chooses submission rather than destruction. This choice is EXACTLY the free engagement God desires with us.

In contrast, my youngest child is known for his stubborn choices to cut off his nose to spite his face. He would rather lose his privilege of attending a fun birthday party than agree to my demand he put on his shoes in a timely fashion. He would rather prove to me that he has a choice, by picking the wrong one, than admit my wiser judgement and enjoy his life.

God’s grace is in his timing—that he hasn’t ALREADY taken away our privileges, that he offers another way instead, a soothing way, a humble way, a free way. He wants peace.
— Brandi Harris

While you could debate on my parenting, God isn’t a bully. He has every right to be holy and just. He is God, the creator of all things, the ruler of all things, perfect, divine. He knows EXACTLY what really fulfills. He’s not just a mortal pretending to be awesome. He’s not arrogant or puffed up in any way. He will DELIVER on every promise of wonder. As he steps forward to reclaim what is rightfully his, just as he did in the day of Jericho, how will we respond?

God’s grace is in his timing—that he hasn’t ALREADY taken away our privileges, that he offers another way instead, a soothing way, a humble way, a free way. He wants peace. He knows that peace requires justice and he desires justice in cooperative terms, rather than forced, so he has offered us his Son Jesus. He gives us a chance to participate in that justice by trading in what is rightfully his—our lives.

Lord, help us to see your Son for what he is—a peace offering we can simply grasp and enjoy when we let go of what is held tightly in our hands. Help us submit like Rahab and gather all whom we love to know that peace as well.
